Colorado Grouse Camp 2017

Smoke and heat was the theme for our annual Colorado grouse camp this year.   High above the Colorado river is where I started my day off…but not a single bird was located before the temps hit into the mid 80’s.  Surprisingly, this area has been very productive in the past but that day we…

AVERY

There are times life will rattle your bones and will bend your limbs You’re still far and away the boy you’ve ever been So you bend back and shake at the frame of the frame you made But don’t you shake alone Please Avery, come home. -The Decemberists, “Dear Avery” Our hunting adventures are so…

Over the Rivers and Out on the Prairies: A Pictorial Saga

As I sit here contemplating the holidays and the gunning season upon us, I can’t help but be thankful for the family and friends I have. I spent last weekend with Gary Thompson from Silk Lines & Paper Hulls blog near the Big Horns pursuing sharp-tailed grouse and huns in phenomenal country. Gary recently added…

Pointing Dogs & Little Olives

Autumn was made for pointing dogs chasing birds of various kinds around the West for us Wayment boys. (Andy with his Crazy Misty) Of course there’s October baseball…but since the Rockies and the Indians are through…we day dream for the short-lived moments when we can be afield with smoothbores and bird dogs taking in the…

CHUKAR HUNTERS ARE DIFFERENT, so different from our other game birds that they are developing their own cult of hunters— Charley F. Waterman Hunting Upland Birds I’m waiting patiently for gobbling turkeys and caddis flies here in Colorado as the snows continue to fall on my Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  Six inches this morning matter…

The Start of the Crazies

Perfect Colorado weather for a last jaunt across the short grass prairie in search of scaled quail. Bitter-sweetness…the company was grand and the dogs grander! Plans are drawn and dog purchases are being made for the coming fall! I can hardly wait! Idaho for 2 weeks for certain! Pray for the perfect weather conditions and…

Season’s End

The season is winding down…tomorrow is the last day for me and the bird dogs to go out and chase birds. Birds of course being quail. We have had a great season and have piles of memories to hold us over the next seven months til it’s time to be back in the grouse woods….

Rookie Mistakes

Glenn and I went to Kansas last weekend to see first hand the hype of how bad the quail season really is in central Kansas…the heart of  gentleman country.  While loading my dog box into the bed of Glenn’s nice Ford pickup, I left my tattered ol’ Sharp-tail boots at the side of the Tacoma…rookie…
