Anyone that follows the Upland Ways knows of my affection for chasing scaled quail on the prairies specially in my home state of Colorado. The birds are here and with a little bit of effort, research and good bird dogs the birds can be found in decent numbers…at least enough to keep a couple guys walking and the dogs running with their choke-bore noses into the praire winds. The season has started out pretty good this year after an 8 to 10 year drought on the eastern plains. Here are some photos I took thus far in the season. Pull up a chair and stay awhile and thanks for your patronage! Merry Christmas and happy New Year! Setter Feathers…
Very nice post! Beautiful pointers, side by side shotguns and a nice pile of birds. It doesn’t get much better! Nice pics with the Parker. We hope to give the Colorado plains a try after the holidays.
Birdhunter…thanks for the note and couldn’t agree more! Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Not sure you should have told me that there were that good of scalie numbers in CO…..looks like neat country.

Great photos! My plan is to return to the Cimarron Grasslands and venture into SE Colorado to hunt em’. Problem is finding people to go with me, who are willing to camp in late November or early December on the grasslands.
I’m headed to the grasslands today 😬
Damn! We should hook up some day next season. I camp out on the open grasslands.
Yep its hard, even when you have a camper….most people think you’re crazy.
Doc, I love the blog! I aspire to be a blue grouse hippie. Please keep doing what you do, it is appreciated. (that goes for all the bird chasing blogs out there too…some of us need something to do at work lol)
J-Dub thanks for the note! Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Pretty birds those scaled quail. Some nicely composed images too. Especially like the shotgun breech and bird. Happy holidays……
Les Happy holidays to you too! Thanks for stopping by…
